Directions

Step1: Remove the lid and start painting the outside of the box. Crafting is a way to express your creativity so please pick whatever colors you like. My daughter chose to paint her box pink, purple, and white. She ended up swirling all the colors together as they were applied to the box which created a cool sort of marbleized effect. Tip: We like to use a paper plate as a paint pallet to make our clean up quick and easy.

Paint the box

Step 2: Finish painting the box and lid and set aside to dry.

Step 3: Once the box is dry, place the lid back on the box. Grab your glue and yarn. Start in the center of the lid and begin gluing the yarn to the lid spiraling it around from the center to the outside edge. Tip: If you want this process to go faster, I recommend using a glue gun, but younger children will definitely need your assistance if you decide to go this route.

Coil the Yarn

Step 4: When you reach the edge of the lid, start a new layer of yarn on top and start building upwards. Continue gluing and spiraling your yarn to create the “frosting” on the cupcake. Each layer should start shifting inward so that the “frosting” becomes narrower at the top.

Create the Frosting

Step 5: When you reach the top, snip the end of the yarn and tuck the tail into the center of the cupcake. Add a little glue to secure it.

Finished Frosting

Step 6: Here comes the fun part! Now you can decorate the cupcake by gluing the pom poms to the “frosting.” We randomly placed each pom pom and tried to use a variety of colors and sizes. We even found a pom pom that looked like a cherry to add to the top!

Decorating the Cupcake

Now you have a sweet cupcake jewelry box to house your keepsakes! I hope you had fun making this project with us! Remember this cupcake is a great gift idea! Mother’s Day is coming soon! Enjoy:)
